Peritoneal surface malignancies are serious cancers that develop on the lining of the abdomen, called the peritoneum. They often develop when tumours from the appendix, rectum, colon, stomach, ovaries or other organs spread to peritoneal surfaces. Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is a treatment option for these patients where extensive surgery is performed to

remove all visible cancer tissue followed by chemotherapy drug, heated to 42 degrees Celsius pumped through the abdominal cavity using a specialized HIPEC machine. This multimodality treatment considerably increases life expectancy and reduces the rate of cancer recurrence.

The Indian Society of Peritoneal Surface Malignancies (ISPSM) was established for advancing the knowledge and practice of management of peritoneal carcinomatosis in India. The society is registered under the Indian society act with an official website, PAN card and has over 100 doctors. We aim to improve the treatment and survival of peritoneal cancer patients by educating patients, training physicians, by organizing workshops and conference on peritoneal surface malignancies.

Salient features of ISPSM

  1. National HIPEC registry
  2. Annual workshops and conferences
  3. Travelling fellowship for Clinical Training to European HIPEC centres
  4. Protocol for managing PSM in Indian patients
  5. Basic hands on training for OT nurses and technicians

We recently organized the 2nd annual conference “ISPSM Cadaver course & Workshop on Cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC – International Conference on Peritoneal Surface Malignancies” held at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi on 3rd& 4th March 2018. The specialty of the event was the endorsement by European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO). The ISPSM – ESSO Cadaver course & Workshop was a huge success which brought together over 250 delegates from all over India.
